Krishnam Vande Jagadgurum Movie Review
Film: Krishnam Vande Jagadgurum
Starring: Rana,Nayanatara
Director: Krish
Producer: Saibabu Jagarlamudi, Y Rajeev Reddy
Banner: First Frame Entertainments
Music: Mani Sharma
Story
B.Tech Babu (Rana) plans to fly to US
and waits for his visa as he is not interested in taking the legacy of
theater artist of his grand father Subrahmanyam (Kota Srinivasa Rao) He
feels that there isn’t any use in these dramas. Subrahmanyam doesn’t
like this but requests B.Tech Babu to perform in one last drama Krishnam
Vande Jagadgurum in their hometown Bellary. While his grandfather dies
without seeing the drama, Btech Babu in order to fulfill his
grandfather’s last wish leaves to Bellary. He comes across Devika
(Nayanatara) in Bellary and her thoughts make him realize new
responsibilities. Devika is a documentary filmmaker who tries to expose
illegal mining mafia of Reddappa (Milind Gunaaji). Rest of the story is
to be watched on big-screens.
Performances
Krishnam Vande Jagadgurum is Rana’s
challenging role and he proves he is the perfect fit for the bill for
the role of B.Tech Babu. Rana’s different getups and his dialogues and
diction in dramatic characters impress you. KVJ is Rana’s career best
performance considering his emotional scenes, dialogue delivery and body
language.
Nayanatara is beautiful
and has a significant role in the story. Her performance is good, and
it’s commendable that she dubbed herself for her challenging role in the
film.
Venkatesh’s cameo in song brings loads of cheers from fans while Sameera Reddy is hot in the song with sizzling dance moves.
Kota Srinivasa Rao is
brief but leaves his mark, Posani Krishna Murali as Tippu Sultan and
Brahmanandam as Rampam are entertaining; Raghu Babu has a crucial role,
LB Sriram is fine. Others were adequate.
Technical Analysis
Mani Sharma’s music is good and the
songs were well-shot with Jaruguthunnadi Jagannatakam, Arere Pasimanasa
and Sameera Reddy’s song standout. Mani Sharma’s background score is the
biggest asset. Gnanasekhar cinematography is top-class and dialogues by
Sai Madhav Burra are brilliant. Screenplay is good and editing is
crisp. Production values are standard.
Analysis
Director Krish takes up a challenging
plotline for KVJ like his previous films and he successfully conveys a
message through it incorporating the commercial. Few of the dialogues
“Kala anedhi brathuku ichide kadu brathuku nerpedhi”, “Adhi kalaa nidhra
lo kanedhi...idhi khala nidhra lepedhi” and Nayanatara’s dialogue on
birth are quite good ones. Besides Rana, and Krish’s narration, Krishnam
Vande Jagadgurum dialogues and Mani Sharma’ background score are
special highlights. Songs placement hinders the flow of the screenplay.
Graphics could have been much better in the first half and the film has
some bloopers, nonetheless the minor loopholes can be overlooked for a
meaningful film KVJ. The interval bang and pre-interval scenes, pre
climax episodes are well-shot while the climax song and scenes are
excellent.
Final Verdict
A Good Watch… Go for it!!!
CGTR Review Rating: 3.25/5

Cast: Pawan Kalyan, Tamanna, Prakash Raj
Cinematography: Shyam K. Naidu
Editing: SR Shekhar
Music: Mani Sharma
Producer: DVV Danayya
Story, Screen-play, Direction: Puri Jagannath
Power Star Pawan Kalyan’s Cameraman Ganga Tho Rambabu (CGTR)- After the super success of Gabbar Singh, Power star has chosen Puri Jagannath to his movie Cameraman Ganga Tho Rambabu.
CGTR movie can be called a political satire. It shows how politicians are dividing people especially students in the name of caste for their vote bank. Ram babu (Pawan Kalyan) is a hot blooded person with sincere social-responsibility. Unlike others, he reacts immediately for the news and tries to rescue the needy. Ali Enters as senior of Pawan Kalyan in the same channel. Tamanna (Ganga) works for a news channel and follow Rambabu to join the team after knowing about his character. Opposition leader Kota Srinivasa Rao (Jawahar Naidu) gives sleepless nights to the Nasser (CM) Chief Minister of the state. Kota Srinivasa Rao aim is to see his son Prakash Raj (Rana Babu) as Chief Minister. The first half is interesting with a couple of songs, comedy and action sequences.
In the second half, hero takes on a politician and his energetic performance and dialogue delivery keep you glued to the screens. Rana babu gets ready to fight with Ram babu. Rana babu challenges that he is going to be CM using media. Then the war starts between them. How Ram babu won the challenge against Rana babu? is the rest of the story. The emotional and politically charged climax is simply superb. Does Prakash Raj become CM? You will find in theaters.
Analysis:
CGTR Director Puri Jagannadh has tried to establish the character of Rambabu in the first half and this hour is good in parts. First half of the movie is superb with Comedy, Pawan Kalyan mark dialogues and scenes between Pawan Kalyan and Tamannah. Second half is key to the movie and comes out excellent. Pawan Kalyan is once again has come up with a brilliant performance. Especially, this half of the movie deals with contemporary issues and apparently awakens social responsibility in every individual.
Performance:
Pawan Kalyan’s energetic performance and carried the movie on his shoulders. Puri mark dialogues are superb. Prakash Raj and Kota Srinivasa Rao performances are memorable. Brahmanandam, Ali comedy sequences are nice. Tamanna is delivered a wonderful performance. Dharmavarapu Subrahmanyam is also good in performance. Scarlet Wilson sizzled in an item song.
Technicalities:
Dialogues and Screenplay by Puri Jagannadh is fantastic. Shyam K Naidu's Cinematography is outstanding. Mani Sharma background score is excellent. Stunts by Vijay is too good.
Final Word: Go and Watch Cameraman Ganga Tho Rambabu (CGTR) for Powerstar Pawan Kalyan's excellent performance. CGTR is packaged with full of entertainment. Another hit for power star pawan kalyan this year.
MAATTRRAAN MOVIE REVIEW
Review by : MY
Starring: Suriya, Kajal Aggarwal, Sachin Khedekar, Vivek Oberoi Direction: K. V. AnandMusic: Harris JayarajProduction: AGS Entertainment, Kalpathi S. Aghoram
Maattrraan brings together the tested hit combination of
director K V Anand and Suriya once again after Ayan. Touted to be the
first Indian film to use performance capture technology, Maattrraan
centers on conjoined twins as a basic arc but delves more on the adverse
effects of genetic engineering when man starts thinking himself to be
God.
Anand’s previous films have established him as a mainstream movie maker with a lucid understanding of the semiotics of commercial film making that entertains and educates the audience to certain extent.
To hook the contemporary attention-scant viewer to the screen for an extended period is an uphill task and Anand succeeds in this domain fairly well. Good looking and efficient cast, rich and grandeur visuals, pleasing music, energetic stunts, an interesting premise and an able direction help him in this endeavor.
Interestingly for Suriya this is his second film on the subject of genetic engineering immediately after 7aum Arivu. Whether it is a restrained reaction or a cheerful retort, this hardworking actor delivers it with consummate ease. As the flamboyant Agilan or the grey matter rich Vimalan, Suriya brings out the necessary dichotomy quite well, very typical of him. His sincerity and dedication is palpable in every frame. Be it the action sequences or the romantic frames, Suirya crafts a niche performance.
Kajal Agarwal has a significant role to play too and she pulls it off successfully. Chinmayee has dubbed for Kajal and the fact that the former can speak good Russian helps the character appreciably. However, even during serious scenes, the lady seems to be having a cheerful disposition! Sachin Kadekar has a meaty role next only to the hero and he gets his acts right with his fine portrayal as a maverick scientist. Tara who featured as Karthik’s little sister in Agni Natchathiram is Suriya’s mom in Maattrraan and the lady fits her role perfectly.
One of the major highlights of the film is its VFX. Helmed by Srinivas Mohan of Endhiran fame, the VFX team has worked hard and it is evident in all the frames that feature the conjoined twins. The action sequence at the roller coaster ride is the best example where all the departments like the camera, stunt, VFX and Suriya have worked in epic tandem and the result is brilliant. Editing plays a crucial role in such visual effects intensive movies and editor Antony has done complete justice to his craft.
Cinematographer Soundarrajan creates a huge canvas in song sequences in the Nani Koni number and fills it with rich and spectacular sights. The splendor of Norway is breathtaking in this song. In all, the film looks rich and grandeur, thanks to Soundarrajan’s angles and lighting. Scintillating songs and good RR of Harris Jeyaraj enhance the appeal. Kaal Mulaithe Poove is a visual and an aural delight. Other tracks are also humworthy.
It is apparent that stunt master Peter Hein has worked over time to get the appropriate effect more so when the scene involves conjoined twin. However the scene in the forest towards the climax is a long drawn affair and could have been trimmed.
The concept of genetic engineering and especially baby designing is new to Tamil cinema (or even to Indian cinema?) and Anand has packaged this concept interestingly. Humor does not course through the films’ veins but the scene at the theatre when the impish Suirya teaches a few lessons on romance to the somber Suriya provides light moments.
KV Anand has managed to make the script pacy. However at 2 hours and 48 minutes, the movie still feels a tad lengthy. This could have been reduced.
There is a pattern in K V Anand’s films. There is a definite social message which he masquerades with commercial components and packages it interestingly. Maattrraan also follows the route and it delivers what it promises- a rich and stylish entertainer with an interesting story.
Verdict: A rich and grandeur entertainer

Listen Review:
Story:
Journalist Sriman alias Srimannarayana (Balakrishna) fights for his father’s dreams. His father (Vijay Kumar) dreams for the welfare of farmers. He starts a fund for them and a huge sum of money collected from various donations. Bad guys eye that money and kills Sriman’s father. Sriman gets arrested as the money disappears. How does he fulfill his father’s wish is the crux of this story.
Analysis:
Srimannarayana is a commercial film made with noble intentions. This film shows a solution to the farmers welfare. Despite the intention, Srimannarayana fails to entertain due to lackluster screenplay and poor writing.
Movie starts off at a sluggish pace and moves ahead without proper aim and direction. Everything settles after an hour into the movie. From then on it is about the revenge drama. Hero will never be challenged by any of the cardboard villains.
Director’s weakness to establish emotional situations has been highlighted throughout. Hero is never put into a spot of bother. He just cakewalks anywhere and one gets a feeling that journalists are super human and have super powers.
Instead of wasting the first hour on unnecessary stuff, the director should have established the characters properly. Although the middle part of the movie is a bit better than the rest, it fails on a whole due to uninteresting narration. Even so called mass elements are not utilized properly. This film could have been better if the director handled it in a proper way. Treatment like Ganesh and Aazad movies might have worked here.
Performances:
Balakrishna is usual. He is at his best in emotional scenes. His dances are very good. Despite the age he is flexible. Parvati Melton is okay as the journalist who falls head over heels for the hero. Isha Chawla is fine. Suresh is weak as the main villain. Rest of the villains didn’t leave any mark as their characters are not etched properly. Comedy too didn’t work as it was stale. Vijay Kumar and Vinod Kumar are apt in their respective roles.
Technicalities:
Cinematography is okay. Editing is poor. Music by Chakri is fine. There are a couple of foot tapping numbers. Background score is not up to the mark. Director Ravi Kumar Chavali failed to get the emotions right. Bad script didn’t allow him to excel in any department. Should have taken care for this big ticket movie.
Final Word: Srimannarayana fails to impress due to bad script. Balakrishna fans may like it.

The most popular form of worshipping Lord Shiva in Hinduism is in the
Linga form. It is known as Shivling or Shivalinga. The Linga symbol is
an attempt to give form to the formless, referred as Supreme Being or
Brahman in Hindu religion. When a Linga is installed on a Yoni, it
represents the union of Shiva and Shakti – the beginning of creation.
When
our ancestors stood in crude nature, what bewildered him most would
have been the regenerative method – his own and those of animals around
him. This must also have been the time when he was looking to give an
expression to the Supreme Power. It is only natural that the male
reproductive organ appeared to him as the ideal symbol as it represented
strength and regenerative power.
Linga
in Sanskrit means symbol or sign. One of the first uses of the term
‘linga’ in association with Shiva is found in the Shvetasvatara
Upanishad – it says that Lord Shiva, the Supreme Being, has no linga
(sign or symbol). In simple terms, it is impossible to define Brahman or
that is alinga.
Now
it is not possible for a common man to pray to Brahman which is beyond
any characteristic. Human beings need a form to worship. In Sanatana
Dharma, each individual has the freedom to define the Supreme Being or
Brahman in the most convenient way he/ she is comfortable.
When
our ancestors stood in crude nature, what bewildered him most would
have been the regenerative method – his own and those of animals around
him. This must also have been the time when he was looking to give an
expression to the Supreme Power. It is only natural that the male
reproductive organ appeared to him as the ideal symbol as it represented
strength and regenerative power.
The worship of Linga is not exclusive to Hinduism. Menhirs and Phallus have been worshipped by many ancient societies.
The
Mahabharata says ‘Know everything, which is male, to be Ishana, and all
that is female to be Uma; for this whole world, animate and inanimate,
is pervaded by these two bodies. Shiva’s divine Linga is worshipped by
the Gods, seers, Gandharvas and Apsaras.’ (Chapter 7, section 20, verses
22)
The greatness of this form of Shiva is
based on the fact that the children bear neither the lotus symbol of
Brahma nor of Vishnu’s discuss…but one marked with the male and female
organs, the linga and yoni, originated from Mahadeva and Devi (Chapter
13, section 19, verses 78)
Puranas
and Epics in Hinduism narrate in detail why Shiva is worshipped in the
form of linga. It is said that the Supreme Being appeared before Lord
Brahma and Vishnu in the form of a ‘pillar of fire’, which had no end
and beginning. It is one among the many symbols of Brahman. There are
numerous other incidents in the Puranas including the famous Deodar
forest incident in which the wives of saints are attracted to Shiva and
he castrates himself and leaves the Linga on earth as his symbol.
Many of the incarnations of Lord Vishnu is known to have worshipped the Shivlinga including Lord Ram, Parashuram and Krishna.
When the mind is clear and is without prejudices, we will realize that
the Linga form of Shiva is the most innocent form of Brahman that our
ancestors had realized. It is pure and they got it from pure nature.
Many of the forms that we worship today are the reflections of our mind,
which is corrupted by ego, society and education. It is not pure.
That
is why many people mention that Linga worship is a crude method and
they are ashamed of it. Many are comfortable with the beautiful form of
Brahman – that includes the handsome human form of Shiva, Vishnu and
other gods. There is nothing wrong in worshipping Shiva and Vishnu in
the handsome form because Brahman can be worshipped in any form.
An
ancient Greek philosopher had said that if horses were to worship a god
it would have the shape of a horse. All attempt whether it is Linga,
human form or animal form is an attempt to give form to the indefinable
Brahman.
We then strongly defend that my form is the true form and the other form is wrong without realizing that everything is Brahman.

However she meets with an accident and is on her death bed. Gautham arranges for all surgeries and she recovers but after she gains consciousness, Mithuna asks about Surya (Naveen). Apparently, both are in love with each other but Mithuna is told Surya is dead. Meanwhile, Gautham expresses his feelings and he manages to take her to Ooty. He does all attempts to show his love to Mithuna who is unable to forget Surya. Finally she realizes Gautham’s love and decides to marry him. But a twist in the tale happens and what follows after is the rest of the story.
Performances
Naveen Chandra fit the role well and he had that rugged yet artistic look. Not much in terms of expressions or body language but his character etching worked out.
Rahul Ravindran had a naughty spark in his eyes but he has copied Siddharth in his dialogue delivery completely. It would have been better if he didn’t scream so many times.
Lavanya Tripathi is the life and soul for this movie. She is very expressive, naturally beautiful and despite Chinmayi’s dubbing she got the right lip sync. She has got very good potential. But how far she will fit into glamour roles will be a question.
CVL Narasimha Rao was perfect to his role. Pragathi’s over emotional act is usual. Micky was moderate but the dubbing for him by Satish Kasetty was nice. D Murali Krishna made his presence felt as Sarma. The others contributed in their own way.
Highlights
- Lavanya’s performance
- Cinematography
- Background score and songs
- Art
- First half
- Climax
- Screenplay
- Weak entertainment
- No emotional depth
Do you know what happens when students of filmmaking are given a task to make a movie in Mani Ratnam's style? It results in a movie like ‘Andala Rakshasi’.
The entire feel of the movie is filled with total Tamil flavor and as it is, this one has taken the crux of the plot from Mani’s masterpiece ‘Mounaraagam’.
The composition of dialogues, the delivery, the lag in dialogue, stretching at few places, all these are trademark Mani Ratnam movies. Of course, this is no way near comparison to the maverick’s movies but just a reference.
Even if heroine screams it looks like she is whispering. And for some reason the hero is found screaming most of the times, not sure why.
There are many blunders throughout the film’s screenplay. From the take off, the film has a very dull and melancholic feel and the first half is very weak.
The interval bang was hair rising and the second half gathers some energy but barring the episodes of Surya's character and the ‘Pelli Choopulu’ scene there is nothing special.
Most importantly, it is the climax twist which has wrenched the thighs (Thodapaasam) big time. This is a subject which could have been dragged into 500 episodes and made into a daily serial. To say on lighter note, a subject that fits for 500 episode span was wasted by this 2 and half hour movie.
Few questions for Hanu Raghavapudi – why was the backdrop of 90s chosen? What is the message being conveyed through climax? What is the reason behind the heroine falling in love with Surya? On the good side, his taking and making is good but these are few fundamental concepts which need to be worked.
Anyways, due to the Rajamouli brand, there will be tremendous openings but we have to see how the audience will receive this one.
Bottomline: Straight Telugu film with Sambar flavor.

Releasing today amidst humongous expectations, Billa 2 has
widely been acclaimed as being India’s first prequel. Audiences are
already familiar with David Billa as a character, thanks to the impact
of the earlier Billas which showcased the aura, the daredevilry and the
sheer guts of this man.
Now, Billa 2 was supposed to trace the roots of David Billa. Billa is a man who is always on the lookout for the next big thing and loyalty counts as his biggest virtue. The journey that David Billa goes through in his quest for total control and domination in his domain is what Billa 2 is, in a nutshell.
It is a typical gangster movie with loads of villains and an invincible hero who has truckloads of charisma and style.
The fairly engaging first half of Billa 2 happens in coastal Tamil Nadu and later moves on to Goa. The intro scene wherein Ajith is engaged in a ferocious fight sequence and the indigenous title credits are gripping. The dialogues by Era Murugan and Mohamed Zafar are the highlight in this segment. They are filled with punch and meaning. Sample this “Na Agadhi da, Anaadha illa”, “Mathavanoda Bayam dan nambaloda Balam”. There are more such dialogues that are guaranteed to please Ajith’s fans.
The tempo is lost in the second half. The two heroines, Parvathy Omanakuttan and Bruna Abdullah are more like guest cameos. It is disheartening to note that Parvathy doesn’t live up to the hype. Bruna Abdullah looks ravishing and the scenes where she flaunts her bikini body are sure to please the male populace.
The villains, Sudhanshu and Vidyut are majestic and have terrific screen presence. Vidyut’s prowess at stunts has been positioned in his introductory fight sequence. Sudhanshu has to remain the cold and calculating don and doesn’t get to flex his muscles like Vidyut.
Rahman has a blink and you miss type cameo while Manoj K Jayan, Krishna Kumar and Sriman have negative roles which they have done adequately. Ilavarasu impresses in the first half and he is missed in the second half when the action shifts gears.
Ultimately, this movie is made for Ajith’s fans. Ajith looks fit in the first half while in the second half we get to see him in his typical suave avatar. The ferocious eyes in the fight sequences are Ajith’s biggest strength. His daring guts in the climax helicopter stunt have already been well documented but one does feel that the impact created by this aerial fight isn’t as great as expected.
The fight sequences done by three separate stunt masters stand out for their ruthless nature. The fist cuffs are fast and they are violent to say the least. The A certificate seems justified. There are lots of stylish gun shots and blasts that send the pulse racing. But the impact created by all these explosions isn’t great, again.
The editing by Suresh Urs could have been tauter. The ‘Yedho Mayakkam’ song and the needless short belly dance number in the second half hamper the movie’s flow. That said, the editing and VFX in the ‘Unakkulle Mirugam’ song remind you of the flashy style that you see in Guy Ritchie movies.
It is also disappointing to see the ‘Gang Gang Gangster’ song being reduced to a mere end credits song.
R.D.Rajasekhar’s cinematography has made sure that the movie has a grand look. The songs look glossy, the picture resolution is extra-ordinary thanks to the Red Epic camera and RDR’s work in the helicopter sequence earns extra brownie points.
To conclude, Billa 2 will please hardcore action fans and Ajith fans in particular. The emotional connect goes down thanks to a laborious second half. But, the idea of making a prequel and the grand scale of the movie make sure that the movie isn’t a tiresome experience either. Given the expectations, somehow you feel that the end product hasn’t been delivered.
Verdict : Gangster movie that doesn’t pack a solid punch. Time pass

Cocktail Movie Rating - 2.5/5
At the outset, let me clear one thing. There is nothing unbelievably
novel about Cocktail but the beauty of the film lies in the authenticity
of the storytelling.
Set in London, Gautam (Saif) is a Don Juan of sorts, wooing women with his cheesy one-liners all the time. He comes across Meera (Diana) but eventually lands up with her friend, Veronica (Deepika).
Over the course of the film, they start living together, enjoy some great moments & Gautam realizes that he isnt sure whom he lives.
That is the premise that the film follows. What eventually happens, watch & find out.
The film starts slowly but slowly goes into overdrive as the first half of the film is a great watch. The second half has a very strong start but the curse strikes, as it eventually meanders to a long-drawn melodramatic finish.
Some parts of the film are beautifully handled, like the scene between the 3 where Saif confesses his love, his talk with his uncle & the highlight of the film, Deepikas drunken fiasco.
The music by Pritam is outstanding & maintains the mood right. Visually, Anil Mehtas lens keeps it colourful & lively.
Saif Ali Khan delivers a spirited performance that holds the film together. Dimple Kapadia & Boman too, put up a great show.
But the heart & soul of the film, in what could be called as her careers best outing, is Deepika Padukone. Shes never looked better & sets the screen on fire.
Debutant Diana Penty looks good but rarely changes her expression.
Director Homi Adajania moves miles away from Being Cyrus with an out-and-out commercial entertainer. Its remarkable how he keeps it real & doesnt try to muddle it with pointless emotions but alas, gets caught in the trap towards the end.
20 minutes shorter & it would have been a fantastic film
To sum it up, Cocktail is a one time watch. It is a great effort by a director to use the Bollywood mould in the most realistic fashion possible. If you are a Deepika fan, this ones a must watch for you.

Bol Bachchan Movie Review
Film: Bol Bachchan
Starring: Ajay Devgan, Abhishek Bachchan,Asin,Prachi Desai,Asrani
Director: Rohit Shetty
Producer: Dhillin Mehta,Ajay Devgn
Banner: Shree Ashtavinayak Cinevision Ltd,Ajay Devgn Films
Music: Himesh Reshammiya, Ajay-Atul
Ratings :: 3/5
Like that cute little boy who holds his father's face in both his hands to get attention, "Bol Bachchan" just doesn't let go. Its relentless quest for a rolicking time is infectious. The comic confusions are put forward with a giggly gusto. You can see the team had a great time shooting this subverted version of a 1979 comic classic.
Hrishikesh Mukherjee would be unable to recognize this version of his comedy 'Golmaal' on which Bol Bachchan is based. Hell, he might have even sued for subversion of his creative property. But then, he always loved the Bachchan family. And there are the two Bachchans in the film - Abhishek Bachchan and his likeable comic partner Krushna Abhishek. No, make that 3. At the very start the senior-most Bachchan, the Big B himself, makes a gracious song-and-dance appearance where the director Rohit Shetty lets us know he loves the Bachchans.
In one way or another.
The film casts Abhishek Bachchan in a double role of Abbas and his doppelganger double Abhishek Bachchan. Yes, that's the name given to Abhishek's character when he comes face-to-face with the village head-honcho Ajay Devgn, a kind of benign mukhia who is goofy and rather dumb, so dumb that he actually believes the on-screen Abhishek Bachchan's cock-and-bull story about how his parents named him as such because they were big fans of Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan.
Right.
Devgn's character, a not-so-gentlemix of a pehelwaan and Anil Kapoor in Virasat is as far removed from its origins, namely Utpal Dutt in Golmaal, as Archana Puransingh is from Dina Pathak. The former steps into the latter's role with the kind of defiant toss of her head and bosom that makes the transition more of a humorous takeoff than a homage.
Indeed, some of the funniest scenes in this fair comic romp into Hrishida's backyard feature the excellent Ms Puransingh.
The tongue-in-cheek tribute to the original film is quite often so cocky it makes you wince. Rohit Shetty has stripped away the gentle amiable wit of Hrishikesh Mukherjee and replaced it with a raw and ripe humour that takes swipes at anything that comes in the way of the satire.
Yes, the original featuring Amol Palekar and Utpal Dutt plays on television in a sequence. And there's a play being staged in Rohit Shetty's imaginary village where two actors impersonating Dutt and Palekar enact the original film.
That is as close as we get to Hrishikesh Mukherjee in this punk-parody of the original comedy.
Valiantly, the dramatic tension in the comedy is based on a communal divide. The hero Abbas has to invent a Hindu phantom-double to avoid a religious backlash. Unusually for a comedy, the filmkeeps making sharp stinging remarks on the communal issue without causing offence. In one specially audacious sequence, the film's writer targets two minority communities, the Muslims and gays, in the same range of vision without tripping over.
Now, that's no mean achievement.
The cute Prachi Desai playing Devgn's kid-sister remarks that some of our biggest names like Abdul Kalaam and Shah Rukh khan are "like that". Devgn has the other minority community in mind.
Bol Bachchan dares to carry its sense of fun to an extreme of playfulness without toppling over into crassness. It takes on the scared cows without putting its feet in the cow poo. The elderly are often a brunt of ridicule in the plot. But again, no offence meant. Asrani's rapport with his screen-son is truly funny.
However what doesn't work is the enforced action sequences where just to simulate a climax in the trademark Rohit Shetty style, cars leap into the air, buses crash into windows - Shetty's stunts are becoming predictable in their execution. A change is needed there.
What works are the performances. Ajay Devgn as the endearing bully is in top form. His mongrelized use of the English language is the cheekiest subversion of the original film's content. In Hrishida's Golmaal Utpal Dutt spoke only the purest form of Hindi.
Abhishek Bachchan pulls off the double role with the right blend of the subtle and the saucy. This is his second film after Dostana where he has to impersonate homosexuality.
Abhishek is dead-on.
A special word for Abhishek Krushna and Archana Puransingh who provide plenty of chuckles with their comic timing.
Hrishida may not approve. But this is Golmaal without the innocence of those times. And that's the way we like it.
